Swedish home appliances giant Electrolux is to invest around 130 million euros (170 million dollars) to build two factories in southwestern Poland.

One factory, which will produce dishwashers, will be built in Olawa, near the city of Wroclaw, where Electrolux has already bought a 30-hectare (90-acre) plot of land for nine million zlotys (2.25 million euros, 3.0 million dollars).

"We have signed a preliminary agreement for the land. Now, the Swedes are drafting a request for a building permit," Olawa town official Ewa Szczepanik is quoted as saying.

According to Szczepanik, construction of the 40-million-euro factory will begin this year, and when completed, the site will provide jobs for around 500 people. A second, 26-hectare plot has been acquired by the Swedish company in Zarow, also in southwestern Poland, where a 90-million-euro factory was to be built. That installation will also produce dishwashers.

Late last year, Electrolux said the Zarow factory would become operational in 2006, produce 360,000 dishwashers and employ 350 people. Electrolux currently has one factory in Poland, which produces clothes dryers.
