Krystian Bala has been sensationally jailed for 25 years for the planning and leading of the murder of Dariusz Janiszewski - despite no concrete evidence being provided against him.
For years police were baffled as to cause and perpetrator of the murder of Janiszewski, a well-liked businessman whose mutilated body was fished out of the river Odra in 2000, when they received an anonymous tip off to read the crime thriller 'Amok', written by Bala. In the book Bala describes a murder in gruesome detail, eerily similar to that of Janiszewski's.
Far from proof of guilt you might think, but police were shocked by the similarities between fact and 'fiction', as some of the details described had never been made public and could only be known to the police, the coroner - and the killer! The police continued to investigate Bala as a possible murder suspect and found two other key pieces of information. Firstly that a Polish crime programme had received emails from Asia calling the murder the 'perfect crime', at the very time Bala was in Asia. The second was that Bala had sold Janiszewski's phone on the internet four days after the murder (in court he claimed that he found it in a cafe).
This latter piece of evidence proved too much for judge and jury, who also learned that Bala is an intensely possessive and jealous person, who harboured a grudge against Janiszewski believing him to be having an affair with his estranged wife.
”He has two faces,“ said Judge Lidia Hojenska in her summary. “One is the face we see in court, composed and thoughtful, and the other is very aggressive, aggravated by alcohol.”
Bala is likely to appeal the sentence. |
