Wroclaw Breaks Guinness World Record

"What has Jimi Hendrix got to do with Wroclaw Poland?" isn't the start of a bad joke, but a question many wayfarers may be prompted to ask when they hear about the annual 'Thanks Jimi Festival' that takes place on the Main Square here in Wroclaw each May.

Well a love of music is the answer! The 'Thanks Jimi' festival though is more than a homage to one of rock'n'roll's greatest showmen and the sound he created, but an annual world record attempt at simultaneous playing of the guitar. In 2007 the event organisers managed to attract a whopping 1,881 guitar players to strum along to Hey Joe at the same time, thus entering the hallowed Guinness World Record Books - but this year they managed to go seventy better. A staggering 1,951 saluted Jimi in 2008 with a simultaneous rendition of his legendary blues number.

Completely pointless of course, but a lot of fun.
