In one of the darkest stories to hit Polish headlines in recent times, a man dubbed as the "Polish Josef Fritzl" has been arrested for imprisoning, torturing and the repeated rape of his daughter over a period of six years.
The tragic case bears an uncanny resemblence to the story of the Austrian father, Josef Fritzl, who perpetrated similar crimes against his daughter for an astonishing 24 years in a purpose-built dungeon.
The Polish girl known as Alicja was forced to live the life of a sex slave since the age of 15, giving birth to two children by her father, which she was forced to abandon in hospital. Both Alicja and her mother were forced to keep silent about the father's crimes on pain of death, before finally finding the courage to approach the police.
The crime co-incides with President Tusk's drive to push forward obligatory chemical castration for paedophiles with a repeated history of offending. If his proposals are passed, Poland will have one of the toughest sentencing in the world on sex-offenders.
