Facelift for Market Square

The cobblestones in and around the Old Town's Market Square are a vital part of the area's historic integrity but as those favouring sky-high heels will have noted, a little hard to navigate.

Luckily the time for broken heels and bone-shaking bike rides is over, at least for the time being. The city has decided to re-fill the spaces between the Market Square's cobblestones with the traditional sand and gravel chips. The material is certainly keeping with the historic aesthetic, but some have questioned its durability- the job is expected to last a mere 3 years. Even though the alternative resin has proved to be easier to clean and longer lasting, historical conservationists have argued for the authentic looks of gravel and sand, not to mention the significantly lower cost.

Whatever the material, the filling of those pesky gaps will not only significantly lift the looks of the Square but will no doubt be appreciated by Wroclaw's cyclists and pedestrians alike.

This is great- just in time for the warmer weather. Last year I avoided some of the cobblestone roads in the Old Town, including the Market Square, when I was biking around... good to know that's over!
