Euro 2012 confirmed for Wroclaw
Wroclaw has received confirmation that it will be a primary host city during the Euro 2012 football tournament. The city managed to prove itself over the last two years of observations by UEFA representatives by continuing to build its stadium on schedule and planning the construction of a new airport terminal. The city's solid transport infrastructure also gave Wroclaw an edge, and is something that will continue to be improved until 2012.
The president of Wroclaw, Rafal Dutkiewicz, has also announced that the city will be pushing to host one of the tournament's quarterfinals in addition to the Group matches already planned.
Poznan, Gdansk and Poland's capital also received matches. Chorzow and Cracow will remain reserve cities, but are expected to host matches.
It's not a big surprise for Warsaw organisers as the capital cities of Poland and Ukraine were expected to be confirmed as host cities. UEFA administrators praised Poland's progress to prepare for the tournament, but urged Ukraine to step up the pace of preparation in order to receive an additional city.
Four cities were initially planned for each country, but has been pared to four in Poland and two, at most, for Ukraine. The final is expected to take place in Kiev, though organizers warn that the privilege can yet be transferred to Warsaw. Dates and locations of particular matches are to be announced on November 30th 2009.
