A4 Motorway Completed

The western stretch of the Polish A4 highway, which starts at Krakow and runs westwards to the German border through Wroclaw, has officially opened.

The final 51km section of the motorway near Wroclaw was opened by Polish Deputy Minister Grzegorz Schetyna and Cezary Grabarczyk, Polish Minister of Infrastructure. The finished Polish A4 cost roughly 1 billion zloty (approx. 235 million euro), though the project was largely financed by the European Union. The plan is to finish all major Polish motorways currently in construction by the Euro 2012 Football championships.

The A4 motorway now connects Wroclaw directly with western Europe - the A4 runs through Germany and into France through Paris, ending up in Calais. Eastwards, the road (although not yet a full motorway), stretches from Krakow onto Kiev and Kazakhstan.
