Polish Victory Kicks off Eurobasket 2009
The European basketball championships are now underway across Poland, where Wroclaw is one of the seven cities to host matches. Wroclaw's Centennial Hall will play host to matches between countries in Group D - Lithuania, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Poland.
The first Polish match took place yesterday, with Poland defeating Bulgaria's team with a 90-78 point victory. The Polish team, headed by star player Marcin Gortat of NBA team Orlando Magic, is hopeful for a position in the finals.
On the flip side of the coin, Polish Radio has reported that the head of the Polish Basketball Association (PZK), Roman Ludwiczuk, has serious concerns about the financial benefits for Poland in hosting such an event. The PZK has spent 37 million zloty, and each host city has also financed elements of organization. Some sponsorships were secured, but Ludwiczuk remains unsure whether Poland's decision to host the championship will pay off.
