Scars of World War 2

The land on which Wroclaw sits has been both vehemently fought over and intensely fought on over its long turbulent history. Many scars remain, and the most literal proof of the wars fought on Wroclaw's soil is occasional discovery of unexploded bombs.

Recently a 500-kilo World War II-era explosive was discovered by construction workers behind the city's Opera House in downtown Wroclaw. Buildings in the area were emptied as 3000 people were evacuated until the bomb was safely defused and destroyed.

As we reported last year, unexploded bombs are sometimes found in Wroclaw but have in recent history always been disposed of safely.
