Stolen Sign Returns to Auschwitz

The entire world was shocked at the news that the infamous "Arbeit Macht Frei" ("Work Sets You Free") sign from the entrance of the former concentration camp Auschwitz, was recently stolen. Thankfully after intense police investigations, the sign was later recovered in the city of Torun cut into three pieces. It appears that the thieves motives were not ideological, and it seems likely that the theft of the sign was commissioned by a collector of Nazi memorabilia.

The Polish Minister of Culture Bogdan Zdrojewski has promised the Auschwitz museum 400 000 zloty (approx. 96 000 euro) to improve security at the site. The museum is said to be planning the installation of ten new security cameras.

The former concentration camp, now a museum, is located in the city of Oswiecim roughly 2 hours south-east of Wroclaw in the direction of Krakow. Read more at our sister site Cracow Life.

I was also shocked when I read the news on the BBC. But I am so glad they found it. I wonder what led them to the criminals?
