Qualifying Groups Chosen for Euro 2012
Representatives from UEFA associations along with the UEFA president Michel Platini descended on Warsaw's Palace of Culture and Science last weekend to participate in the draw for determining Euro 2012 qualifying groups.
Meanwhile in Wroclaw, the city continues to struggle with the construction of its stadium in preparation for the championship. Having recently dropped its contract with Mostostal Warszawa, the city of Wroclaw has signed on German developers Max Boegl as the new building firm for completing the stadium. Despite severe delays, the stadium is scheduled for completion by mid-2011.
With the stadium completed in time, Wroclaw will host three group matches though there is also speculation that the city may yet host a quarter-final match as well. The location for this game remains undecided, and is currently split between Wroclaw and the northern city of Gdansk.
As hosts, Poland and Ukraine are automatically qualified for the European football championship. The remaining countries are split into qualifying groups as follows:
Group A: Germany, Turkey, Austria, Belgium, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan
Group B: Russia, Slovakia, Republic of Ireland, FYR Macedonia, Armenia, Andorra
Group C: Italy, Serbia, Northern Ireland, Slovenia, Estonia, Faroe Islands
Group D: France, Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belarus, Albania, Luxembourg
Group E: Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Hungary, Moldova, San Marino
