Wroclaw to host European Culture Congress

Starting July this year, Poland will begin its six-month Presidency of the European Union. The most important cultural event associated with the Presidency is the European Culture Congress, which will take place in Wroclaw in September.

Presented under a theme of "Art for Social Change", the European Culture Congress will bring together around 300 noted cultural figures for a wide variety of events across a four-day schedule. Discussion panels are a big part of the Congress, with such prominent names as Umberto Eco and Vaclav Havel to participate in discussions.

Pioneering artist and composer Brian Eno will premiere a Wroclaw-based interpretation of his "77 million paintings" installation, which will include the Centennial Hall's multimedia fountain in its presentation.

Another highlight will be a performance by Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki in co-operation with experimental guitarist Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead and electronic innovator Aphex Twin.

The Culture Congress will take place across Wroclaw from 8 to 11 September 2011.
