Polish police on Monday were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 40-year-old Italian national after physicians discovered several dozen pouches of cocaine in his stomach.

The Polish PAP news agency reported the man, owner of a stoneworks company, was displaying his wares at a fair, in the southern Polish city of Wroclaw, when he suddenly took ill and was admitted to hospital.

The man subsequently died on the operating table.

Physicians believe one of the packets of drugs found in his stomach ruptured, causing his death.
